A Hextech Gemstone is a gemstone that utilizes the Arcane.

History[]

It is unknown where or how Benzo first obtained the first raw gemstones, but before the start of Season 1 he had sold a few of them to Jayce Talis. Jayce used these gemstones to study the arcane magic within them without permission from the Council/Academy. When Vi, Powder, Mylo, and Claggor break into the laboratory where the gemstones are stashed, Powder accidentally drops one in a rush to flee the scene. Because of the kinetic energy built up from bouncing across the floor, the raw gemstone explodes. The explosion results in a target being placed on the four kids' heads, as well as Jayce being put on trial for housing and using academy restricted items. Jayce's lab equipment, including the raw gemstones, were then set to be destroyed until he and Viktor broke into Heimerdinger's lab to test ways to utilize the arcane energy in the gems. When they figure it out, a burst of energy surges throughout the laboratory; causing the two men and other items in the lab to hover in the air. At the same time, Powder creates a bomb with a gemstone attached that blows up the abandoned factory where Vi, Mylo, and Claggor are trying to save Vander from Silco. The bomb causes an explosion that kills Mylo and Claggor.

Sometime after, the council agrees to allow Jayce and Viktor study the gemstones more and create Hextech.

After the time-skip between Act 1 and Act 2 of Season 1, Hextech blew up in popularity and usage across Piltover. The Hexgates are the main cause of this as they utilize the gemstones to teleport ships to and from Piltover, therefore increasing the trading between Piltover other countries and/or cities in Runeterra. By this time, Jayce and Viktor have invented a new type of gemstone. The refined Hextech gemstone is a smooth crystal that has more reliability than the raw version of the gemstone, as well as being used to power consumer products created by Hextech. They present the refined gemstone and the tools powered by it to Heimerdinger who claims it needs around a decade of refinement to be put in the hands of the masses.

During Progress Day, Jinx steals one of the refined crystals and begins studying a way to utilize it. When she discovers how to harness the power in the crystal, she creates a weapon with it. At the end of Season 1, she uses the weapon to attack the council building.

In the beginning of Season 2, we see the after affects of the attack on the council. Councilor Kiramman, Councilor Bolbok, Viktor (later revived by Jayce using The Hexcore), and Councilor Hoskel were all killed in the attack. Councilor Salo and Councilor Shoola were both injured in the attack with their injuries being paralyzation of the legs and burns on the face respectively.
