Overview

"Happy Progress Day!" is the fourth episode of the first season and fourth episode overall of Arcane.

Synopsis[]

With Piltover prospering from their tech, Jayce and Viktor weigh their next move. A familiar face re-emerges from Zaun to wreak havoc.

Plot[]

The episode begins with Heimerdinger telling Jayce about his friend Stanwick Padidly, whereas Jayce views his statue. Stanwick Padidly was a scientist who sacrificed his ambitions and focused on his students' works for the future of Piltover. Heimerdinger also conveys Jayce's Council's suggestion that he give the speech at the big celebration of the 200th anniversary of Piltover, known as 'Progress Day', instead of Heimerdinger.

At the Progress Day, Jayce and Caitlyn have a banter, and it turns out she's joined Piltover Police Department and become an enforcer. Although her mother was against it, since she wished her daughter had a career 'more befitting her station'. Caitlyn's clearly annoyed with her, as she looks at it as if her mother is trying to keep her from seeing the real world.

It's been several years since the events of the previous episode (and the whole Act I). Thanks to Jayce's and Viktor's work, Piltover has become a high-tech city with robots at Progress Day, airships in the sky, and the most monumental and revolutionary building of Hexgates, which allows ships to teleport all over the world, making Piltover the global shipping lane and bringing huge income to the city.

A ship from the Zaun arrives with tanks full of Shimmer, but a raid of some group with flying skateboards and masks, which is referred to as Firelights, occurs. They immobilize the ship's staff, and a part of the group goes down to the hold of the ship and accidentally launches a trap, which makes a hatch shut down. An explosion happens, and only Jinx shows up from the hold after that. She deals with the rest of the group, but suddenly rips off one girl's mask, revealing her pink hair like Vi has. Memories of being left overwhelm Jinx, so she loses control, kills that girl, and starts to shoot around randomly, hitting allies and enemies.

Jayce and Viktor show Heimerdinger a Hextech Gemstone — the next version of Hextech crystals, which is now stabilized and, therefore, safe to use in everyday life. They demonstrate to him the Atlas Gauntlets, which are portable devices that can significantly increase the strength of one's hands, and the Hex Claw, which has a laser in it. The new Hextech crystal powers both of these inventions. Jayce and Viktor are really inspired by the thought that many people's lives can be improved with a Hextech gemstone, so they want to present it to everybody on Progress Day. Heimerdinger is impressed but doesn't approve of it since such a powerful energy source can get into the wrong hands and be misused.

Caitlyn inspects the ship after the raid and locates Lock, who's been shot by Jinx, in the hold. Caitlyn tries to interrogate him, but Marcus shows up, disrupting it. Now he's the Sheriff instead of Grayson, so he orders Caitlyn to return to her duty guarding her mother's tent and gives her an extra night shift at the celebration.

In Zaun, which looks a bit like a nightclub now, Sevika comes to Silco and tells him about Jinx, calling her a problem for what happened on the ship, but he reins in her. Then, Silco talks with Jinx, and they seem to be close. He even lets her inject his injured eye. Silco reminds Jinx that her sister's gone and suggests she take some time without any missions, which she is upset about. Alone, she starts to talk with the voices in her head. She's annoyed that Silco considers her weak now, so she's up to prove him wrong.

At Progress Day, Jayce hesitates to mention their work with Viktor in his speech. Mel cheers him up and advises him to tell him about their inventions anyway. She seems interested in Jayce and even states, ' Piltover needs a leader who looks forward', hinting it could be him. Jayce suggests that Viktor join him on stage, but he refuses. It can be seen that Jayce's face is only on the mug he's drinking from, as well as on the floating nearby airship. Jayce inspires the crowd with his speech, but eventually decides not to reveal their work.

In the night, other enforcers make fun of Caitlyn's high social status, but she notices a fire. They run into the building and hear a childish voice begging for help. It turns out to be recorded Jinx's voice, so it was another trap from her. An explosion happens, causing death to several enforcers, while Jinx runs away with a Hextech Gemstone. Silco's mad, as her actions would complicate their relationship with Piltover, but then she shows him the stolen crystal and hugs him, wishing him a happy Progress Day.

The Council is worried someone in Zaun can use the energy of Gemstone to build something dangerous, and Jayce confirms it's possible. He blames himself for failing to protect such technology and suggests all Hextech work be suspended, including Hexgates, to keep Piltover safe. But the Councilors contradict him as it would be a huge loss of money. Then, Mel proposes that Jayce become a Councilor to have more influence as he has the necessary knowledge to secure the Hexgates, and thus, they can remain open. The Councilors are hesitant, but Heimerdinger endorses his candidacy, so they vote.

Jayce visits Caitlyn after the explosion. He offers her a job on his staff as a counselor since her parents got her fired. Jayce and they want Caitlyn to be safe, but she's irritated and calls it down. She's had a theory that just one particular person is behind the Undercity's violence. She heads to the prison to speak with Lock once again, but he's been beaten up by some other inmate, who turns out to be Vi.
